American Legion Auxiliary

Our mission is to serve veterans, their families and their communities. The ALA’s mission is carried out through its hundreds of outreach programs delivered by its members, volunteers and national headquarters based in Indianapolis, IN.

Description:
Our agency is the world's largest patriotic women's organization. Some of our programs, to name a few, include the junior leadership conferences Girls State and Girls Nation; the Poppy program, the distribution of hand made crepe paper poppies that are made by disabled veterans, the proceeds of which are given to these industrious veterans; and Americanism, which promotes flag etiquette. Members of American Legion Auxiliary donated millions of volunteer hours to veterans affairs & rehabilitation programs last year alone.

History:
American Legion Auxiliary was chartered by Congress in 1919 to support the endeavors of The American Legion and their four pillars of Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth. Today, we have nearly 900,000 members nationwide in 9,500 communities. This year marks the 90th anniversary of the ALA and the launch of our new Veterans Affairs Voluntary Services (VAVS) volunteer recuitment project, the brainchild of our volunteer development VISTAs.
