United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Indiana (UCPAGI) provides information, referral, advocacy, financial assistance and other support services to Indiana residents with cerebral palsy and their families. An affiliate of the national United Cerebral Palsy Association, UCP has immediate access to current information about treatment and prevention of cerebral palsy. UCPAGI's vision is to advance the independence, integration and inclusion of people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities within our community. UCPAGI's staff and Board are committed to providing the highest quality services in the most cost effective manner and to empowering its clients to have control and choice in all aspects of their lives.
History:
UCPAGI was incorporated in 1953 and originally covered only the central Indiana area. With the dissolution of the state UCP organization in 1991, UCPAGI began serving individuals with cerebral palsy from all 92 Indiana counties. The current caseload includes more than 4,000 children and adults.
In 1987, through a bequest, the UCP Foundation was established solely for the support of UCPAGI's equipment financial assistance fund. Since that time, more than a million dollar's worth of wheelchairs, communication devices and other "durable medical equipment" has been purchased for UCPAGI clients. Other restricted investment accounts fund adapted sports equipment, camperships and college scholarships.
A United Way agency, UCPAGI also receives funding from its annual golf tournament, national corporate sponsors and individual donors in Indiana. With only two full-time staff, UCPAGI depends heavily on the time and talent donated by its Board of Directors and other volunteers.
