Docent/Tour Guide for Presidential Home

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on October 29, 2009

This volunteer will have the opportunity to greet visitors from all over the world and take them on a guided tour of this presidential home, the only one in Indiana. The home contains approximately 80% original artifacts and many one-of-a-kind items such as a document signed by Abraham Lincoln, a letter written by William Henry Harrison while he was president (for only 30 days), a solid gold commerative metal and literally hundreds of other extremely rare items.

Training is one-on-one and consists of comprehensive written material, self-guided tours and following experienced docents on tours. Anyone 18 or over is welcome.

wonderful
Quite often some of the guests we guide through the President Benjamin Harrison Home Museum are people who "do" presidential homes. Almost without exception they say that this was one of the best presidential home tours they have been on. Perhaps this is because it's a beautiful house, about 80% of everything in the home belonged to the Harrison family and they get to walk through almost all of the rooms. The ambiance is as though the Harrisons were still living there. Volunteers not only give tours, but work on special projects, do enacting, garden and many other activities. Our ages range from college to retired. That we volunteers really love the Home is perhaps best exemplified by Viola, who give tours every Tuesday (doesn't even use the elevator) and in August 2005 she will celebrate her 100th birthday. Why don't you join us?
