Read To A Child

RSS XML FeedBackground Active Jun 2, 2006 to Jul 2, 2006

Success By 6 is teaming up with several early childhood centers in Indianapolis to match interested volunteer readers with classrooms and children who could benefit from additional "one-on-one" time. Children need consistent, caring adults in their lives.

Did you know that young children need 1,000 to 1,700 hours of "lap time" (book/story sharing) by the time they enter kindergarten? Some children get as little as 25 hours of lap time in their first five years.

Interested volunteers will read, talk, and play with children in need of a consistent, caring adult in their lives. This is a year-long commitment. Volunteers are asked to commit to visiting a classroom at a chosen location at least two (2) times per month for at least one hour at a time.

Participating centers in 2006 will include:

Auntie Mame's Child Development Center:
-3120 N. Emerson Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46218

Day Nursery:
-2140 Boulevard Place, Indianapolis, IN 46202 -3939 W. 56th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46254 -100 N. Senate Avenue #N150, Indianapolis IN 46204 -3522 N. Central Avenue, Indianapolis IN 46205 -855 N. East Street, Indianapolis IN 46202

St. Mary’s Child Center:
-901 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St., Indianapolis, IN 46202 -9230 Hawkins Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46216

Mentoring a young child is a rewarding experience. Help us meet our goal of ensuring the maximum number of children in our community are read to regularly -- and go on to become better students and lead rewarding lives! All volunteers must attend a one-time, one-hour training at the United Way Building (3901 N. Meridian Street). Each individual will be required to submit to a criminal background check, and in some cases a TB test. These requirements are determined by the early childhood center, and in some cases a one-time minimal fee (under $25) will be necessary.
