Women Aware, Inc. is a private non-profit corporation whose mission is to end abuse for all people…women, men, and children.
Description:
Women Aware is the only agency in Middlesex County providing comprehensive services for all victims of domestic violence and shelter for battered women and children. All of our services are provided free of charge.
History:
Now in our 28th year. Women Aware began as a satellite of Women Helping Women, a counseling agency in Middlesex County. We recognized the need for battered women and children to have a safe place. As such, we began a safe house located in an undisclosed location. Since that time we have grown tremendously. We have 3 sites: one being the safe house; the second, our public legal advocacy office; and, the third our administrative offices and PALS (Peace: A Learned Solution) Program. The PALS Program is a program providing art therapy, play therapy & support groups for residential and non-residential children. We now provide a safe house which not only provides housing for women and children but counseling, job search assistance, housing assistance and transportation. We also provide legal advocacy to help victims in obtaining restraining orders and court preparation at our Outreach office. Walk-in counseling is also provided at the same location. Women Aware has a 24-hour hotline for victims of abusive relationships. Resourcing to batterer's intervention programs is also provided. In 2005, 78 women and 72 children received shelter. Our 24 hour hot-line responded to 6,558 calls while our Outreach center assisted and counseled 2,649 women in filing complaints, obtaining restraining orders and court preparation. Women Aware, Inc. provides support groups for women in domestic violence situations; offered a few times a week and located in different municipalities. 1,397 women actively participated in support groups in 2005. In 2005 the agency provided 187 free community education seminars and trained individuals for Community Domestic Violence Response Teams as a model intervention process. Our PALS (Peace: A Learned Solution) Program served 86 children and 46 parents, providing art therapy, play therapy and on-going counseling for custodial parents.
