United Way of Hunterdon County and the Financial Stability Partnership is helping hard working people and their families in Hunterdon County become financially stable and take the next steps to long-term independence. Right here in Hunterdon County, too many families are walking a financial tightrope—barely getting by, with no ability to save for college, a home, or retirement. That's why we are working together with our partners, both public and private, to transform that financial tightrope into solid ground.
The Financial Stability Partnership is working to bring increased awareness of and access to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to hard working people in our community. The EITC is the largest and most effective federal aid program for low- to moderate-income workers. For many eligible families, the EITC can increase their annual income by as much as 15%. Recognizing the potential economic benefits of the EITC to both families and communities, the Financial Stability Partnership's goal is to educate families about the availability and benefits of the EITC and to provide support services, such as free tax preparation, to facilitate receipt of the credit.
The Financial Stability Partnership is looking for volunteers to become Certified Volunteer Tax Assistors, Volunteer Screeners, and Volunteer Computer Specialists:
Certified Volunteer Tax Assistor provides free basic tax return preparation for eligible taxpayers. These volunteers are required to attend new and/or refresher tax law training as needed, including the use of electronic filing software and successfully pass a test on required tax law knowledge.
Volunteer Screener provides support to the Volunteer Tax Assistors including screening all taxpayers requesting assistance at the site to ensure the customer has the necessary information required to complete his/her return. Certification is not required.
Volunteer Computer Specialist provides technical (hardware/software) support to the Volunteer Tax Preparation site through the tax filing season.
