Celebrity Read is designed to inspire our youth with information about the important contributions people of color have made to American and world history. More importantly, the goal is to bring real life role models who are willing to share their life experiences and, in the process, instill a sense of pride and hope for the tremendous potential that exists when people work together as a community. Celebrity Read now proudly boats over 400 volunteers from a wide variety of racial, ethnic and gender groups. Being a Celebrity Reader takes a small amount of time. Readers select the schools and grades of their choice from among six school districts within the United Way service area. You will be scheduled to speak to one or two classes at your assigned location. Readers report between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. and are usually done between 11:30 and 1 p.m. (Dates with a (p.m.) will report at noon and end by 2:30) You can pick your own reading material or each school will have age appropriate selections available for you. The important thing is to find something brief and interesting. After reading, you will have time to share some of your own experiences, including details of your profession, your educational background, and what you have learned as a result of growing up in today's society. If you would like to register as a Celebrtiy Reader please contact Jeanette Marble at (973) 624-8300, Ext. 295 or email at jmarable@uwewh.org. |
