US department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires all states to conduct " point in time survey" of Homeless persons. This count is conducted every 2 years and the figures are used to determine HUD funding for the next 2 years. The New Jersey Alliance for the Homeless and Monarch Housing joined together to support and effort to conduct the point in time survey and PHC on the same day. We felt this would help get a more accurate count and at the same time provide some services to the people we were counting. As a result of collaboration and the support fo Essex County Executive Joseph Divencenzo, the point in time survey and PHC are being held statewide in New Jersey on January 25, 2007. Homless individuals will be transported to and from the Rink and be assisted by volunteers in order to get access to services they need. Hot meals, hygiene supplies, warm hats, scarves, socks etc will be provided. We need volunteers in the field counting people(orientation on January 17, 2007) as well as inthe Rink to help feed clients and escort them around the service area. If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please contact Deneen Jackson-House at United Way of Essex and West Hudson at (973) 624-8300, ext. 252 or email at dhouse@uwewh.org. |
