January is National Mentoring Month - This year's campaign message: "Share What You Know. Mentor A Child!" When you were growing up, was there someone in your life - a teacher, coach, relative, neighbor, friend or boss - who encouraged you and showed you the ropes? That person was a mentor to you. You can "pass it on" to the next generation by volunteering at a local mentoring program. It doesn't take special skills - just a willingness to listen, offer encouragement, and share what you've learned about life. National Mentoring Month emphasizes that mentoring is a two-way street with benefits for the volunteer as well as for the child. The child gets confidence, significance, a sense of belonging, a hopeful outlook, and the motivation and skills to succeed. Serving as a mentor offers meaning and purpose, and the profound satisfaction of making a lasting difference in a child's life. So, who mentored you? Why not "pass it on" to a young person by volunteering as a mentor? It doesn't take special skills to be a mentor--just an ability to listen and offer friendship, guidance, and encouragement to a young person growing up today.
