Intensive English Language Institute Youth Volunteers

Agency Details:

Intensive English Language Institute
Logo

The Intensive English Language Institute (IELI), a college based program, offers students the opportunity to attain English language fluency and U.S. cultural competencies necessary to succeed in college or university studies, advance professionally, or reach other personal goals.

Description:
IELI offers students flexible ways to study English part time day or evenings to full times days intensively twenty hours per week. The full time program satisfies the criteria for F visas and has students from all over the world.

Volunteers work directly with students to practice fluency in conversations, have 'coffee' groups, or sign up as an English Buddy. English Buddies agree to spend one or two hours per week in informal settings with students. Past Buddies have played basketball and soccer together, gone to movies, met for lunch or gone shopping. Whatever the volunteer and student's particular interests are, they are encouraged to explore them with their Buddies to further their cultural and Language fluency.

History:
IELI began in 1999 as a small project and has grown to a well structured, well organized, academic program which provides a course of study that has helped students move on in their lives to higher goals. Students have left IELI to return to their home countries as better university candidates, gone on to enter undergraduate and graduate programs in the U.S., or furthered their careers due to improved communication skills.
