Botanic Garden Of Smith College
The Botanic Garden of Smith College serves as a living museum of plants native to New England and ecosystems around the world. Our goals are collection and display, education, research, and conservation.
Description:
The Botanic Garden includes the 125 acre college campus arboretum, with a collection of diverse woody plants, the Lyman Conservatory, a rock garden, systematics garden, woodland garden, and perennial and annual displays.
History:
The Smith College campus was originally established over a hundred years ago as a botanic garden and arboretum, designed by the firm of Frederick Law Olmsted. The College’s first president aspired to developing the entire campus so it would be of scientific as well as aesthetic value. The spirit of this concept has persisted and remains basic to our purpose today.
