Joy of Music Program (JOMP) Youth Volunteers

Agency Details:

Joy of Music Program (JOMP)
Logo

Our mission is to foster community through accessible music education and performance. Financial Aid and Outreach is at the core of this mission - an average of over $93,000 a year for the past 3 years has supported 85 to 90 students (18% of our student body)from low and lower-middle income families.

Description:
A community music school with over 550 students enrolling annually and 42 faculty members, we teach private lessons in strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion instruments in classical, folk, rock and jazz styles.

Classes and ensembles include Music & Movement, Children's Chorus, Youth Chorus, Creative Movement & Drama, jazz ensembles, chamber music, string ensemble, flute choir, brass choir, world drumming, frog point fiddlers and chamber orchestra.

The school has a remarkable commitment to financial aid and outreach. Outreach programs currently include drumming with the elderly residents at the Lutheran Home led by Ruth Temsky, a volunteer. We have also run a drumming, dance and singing program for adolescent girls in recovery from alcohol and drug abuse at Grace House. The girls came to JOMP once a week for a two-hour session in the Creative Arts for Grace House Program, led by two JOMP faculty members.

History:
In our 24th season, the school has grown steadily since 1986 and has raised and awarded over $1 million in financial aid since 1992. We purchased and renovated a vacant building on Gorham St, where we have been located since January 2002.
