Preservation Worcester

The mission of Preservation Worcester is to maintain for future generations the sites and structures which are significant to the culture, history, and architecture of the city and to encourage excellence in new design.

Description:
Some of Preservation Worcester activities include maintaining an Endangered Structures list, advocating for historic preservation within the city (for example saving Mechanics Hall, restoring Union Station, and retaining two buildings on the campus of the Worcester State Hospital) and educating people of all ages. Preservation Worcester established an urban design committee, conducts public tours of historic neighborhoods, presents illustrated lectures to the public on local architecture and history, educates elementary school program in the Worcester Public School System, researches topics relating to our mission, and conducts the Tour of Gracious Homes annually.

History:
Preservation Worcester was formed as a grass roots organization in 1969 in response to calls for demolition of Mechanics Hall. Since then the organization has been instrumental in the restoration of several properties in the Oxford/Crown National Register District, Union Station, the Chestnut Street Church, Worcester street clocks and many other historic resources. Our third grade program has provided an opportunity for Worcester's children to experience our landmark architecture first hand.
