"In response to Christ's Love, Lutheran Social Services of New England (LSSNE) serves and cares for people in need."

Description:
Emanuel Village, a subsidiary of LSSNE, primarily provides housing for elders 62 and older. It is a HUD 202 subsidized housing complex consisting of 75 apartments, 2 community rooms, and other common area. Eight units are accessible to mobility impaired residents. Residents pay 30% of their adjusted gross income as rent; HUD pays the difference. Emanuel Village has a part time Resident Services Coordinator who links residents to services in the community that helps them live as independently as possible.

History:
In 1973, The Lutheran Service Association of New England (now known as Lutheran Social Services of New England (LSSNE) was contacted by Emanuel Lutheran Church, which abuts this property, about re-kindling a housing dream. A non-profit corporation called Emanuel Development Corporation a/k/a Emanuel Village was formed as an affiliate of LSSNE. The initial plans were submitted to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). In October 1985, HUD approved the project as a 202 building with Section 8 funding for Elderly and handicapped persons. Possible cost overruns and access difficulties required a revision of plans and delayed the development of the project for five years. Construction began in October 1990 and the building was completed in August, 1991. On September 1, 1991, the first tenants moved into their new apartments in Emanuel Village.
