Jewish Family Service provides counseling and social services to support individuals and strengthen family life. Based on traditional Jewish values of social responsibility and concern for all members of the community, JFS serves those in need without regard to race, religion or the ability to pay.

Description:
JFS provides adoption services, individual and family counseling, geriatric case management and geriatric guardianship programs. Additionally JFS offers programs such as Children Coping with Divorce, Life After Loss, and The Club - a social program for adults with disabilities. JFS serves over 4,000 people annually who reside throughout Worcester County. The agency is staffed by highly trained clinicians who are dedicated to the well-being of their clients and are well regarded for their ability to provide compassionate care for those coping with a variety of obstacles.

History:
Jewish Family Service of Worcester began in 1921 as United Jewish Charities of Worcester, Inc. At that time JFS became a charter member of the Community Chest, now known as the United Way of Central Massachusetts.
In the 1930s, JFS moved from a financial assistance agency to a counseling and social health and welfare organization.
In the 1940s, JFS helped with the formation of the Worcester Jewish Federation and focused energy on the resettling of displaced Jewish refugees coming to Worcester.
In the 1950s, the focus shifted to service for family and children and changed the agency name to Jewish Family Service of Worcester, Inc. to reflect the broader scope.
During the 1960s JFS expanded to offer homemaker services and in the 1970s was accredited as a full-fledged social service agency.
Since that time the agency has grown to offer programs in response to social needs as they arise.
