The YWCA of Central Massachusetts strives to be an all-inclusive women's advocacy and resource center with pro-active membership serving the diverse need of women through leadership, service and support.
Description:
The YWCA of Central Massachusetts provides career counseling, vocational testing and training, job search assistance, resume writing and interview skills training, GED instruction for young parents, child care programs in Worcester and Westborough, transitional housing, a state-of-the-art health and fitness center serving a diverse population of women and men, special wellness and fitness programs for senior women, individuals with disabilities and women recovering from breast cancer, and information advocacy, support or emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence.
History:
The YWCA of Central Massachusetts was founded in 1885. The first home of the YWCA was rented space on Main Street used for an employment office. The first Boarding Home was completed on Chatham Street in 1892 with room for fifty women. A gymnasium and facilities for education were added in 1915. In the 1920's a new activities building with a swimming pool was built. Our current facility at 1 Salem Square was built in the 1960's. In 1968, services were added at the Eli Whitney building in Westboro. In the 1970's childcare evolved to become the full fledged childcare centers we have today. In 1996, the YWCA merged with Daybreak Resources for Women and Children.
