Seven Hills Disability Resources And Advocacy

The mission of the Worcester Area Arc, Inc. is to advance and promote the general welfare, rights, and interests of children, adults, and families with mental retardation and associated developmental disabilities within the greater Worcester community.

Description:
The Worcester Area Arc mission is accomplished by:

  • advocating for needed supports & services for individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • advocating for adequate laws for the care & protection for individuals with mental developmental disabilities.
  • promoting the general welfare of individuals with developmental disabilities at home, school, and in the community.
  • Volunteers are welcome:
  • to attend and aide individuals with disabilities at
either of two different Adult Self Advocacy groups
which meet one night/month at Clark University.
  • to attend and aide teens 18 - 22 years old at
weekly SAY What (Self Advocacy for Young Adults)
meetings. In addition to working on Self Advocacy
skills, the teens are practicing independent living
skills. November 2001 for ten weeks they prepared
meals. January 2002 for 12 weeks they are learning
about Personal Health and Safety. In April, 2002
the group will learn and practice using public
transportation.
  • to help in the Arc office with mailings, quarterly
newsletters, and maintaining the Arc resource
library.
  • to help plan a variety of workshops for people who
are supporting people with disabilities such as
housing workshops, sibling workshops, SSI workshops.

History:
In 1951 parents organized the Worcester Association for Retarded Children (WAARC)to promote access to education, community participation, supports and housing for people with developmental disabilities. In 1996 Seven Hills Foundation was created as the parent organization with 4 operating affiliates. Worcester Area Arc, Inc. is one of the affiliates.
