UMass Memorial Hospice

UMass Memorial Hospice is a comprehensive health care program dedicated to the needs of the terminally ill. We compassionately assist the patient and their family to maintain dignity and quality of life.

Description:
Its mission stems from a reverence and respect for life, with a focus on quality of life. The goal is to keep patients as alert, comfortable and active for as long as possible. Life can be more valuable and meaningful when comfort is achieved. Hospice helps the patient and family cope with illness through a coordinated approach to care and through physical, emotional and spiritual support. Volunteers play an important role in supporting patients and families by providing respite and assistance.

History:
Memorial Hospital took over the former Wachusett Home Health Agency, and the Home Hospice Program began in 1995. UMass and Memorial Hospitals merged several years ago and we became UMass Memorial Hospice.

Miscellaneous Information
Are any opportunities appropriate for youth ages 18 or under? If yes, what age range?
Volunteers MUST be at least 18 years old. There are no longer opportunities for volunteers under 18. Volunteers "provide a gentle, loving presence" to terminally ill patients and their families. They also provide respite for families and interact with patients in activities of the patients' choosing. These activities can include something as simple as silent companionship with a patient in a coma.
