Mass Audubon's Broad Meadow Brook Conservation Center & Wildlife Sanctuary
Mass Audubon is the largest conservation organization in New England, concentrating its efforts on protecting the nature of Massachusetts for people and wildlife.
Description:
Mass Audubon protects more than 30,000 acres of conservation land, conducts educational programs for 250,000 children and adults annually, and advocates for sound environmental policies at the local, state, and federal levels. Established in 1896 and supported by 65,000 member households, Mass Audubon maintains 45 wildlife sanctuaries that are open to the public and serve as the base for its conservation, education, and advocacy work across the state.
History:
Found in the southeast corner of Worcester, Mass Audubon's Broad Meadow Brook Conservation Center and Wildlife Sanctuary protects the nature of Massachusetts through its active schedule of educational programs, grassroots and legislative advocacy, and ecological research activities. Serving Worcester County and the Blackstone River Valley, Broad Meadow Brook reaches out to communities, schools and residents, working to improve the quality of our environment and conserve natural resources. Broad Meadow Brook was established in June of 1990, when the Worcester community rose to the challenge of helping the Massachusetts Audubon Society raise funds to protect this urban oasis. In just three months, more than $600,000 was raised to acquire the critical 15 acre Holdredge property, which would provide the needed public access point and the funds to renovate the former horse barn into an education and visitor center. The Society's 15 acres became the vital link to lands owned by the New England Power Company (137 acres) as well as 120 acres owned by the City of Worcester and designated as conservation land, and the Greater Worcester Land Trust. All these parcels are now managed by Mass Audubon as a wildlife sanctuary. Additional land has been donated to the sanctuary by generous neighbors interested in maintaining this wildlife area. Open to the public in 1991, Broad Meadow Brook now has a land base of more than 400 acres of woodlands, fields, wetlands and streams, which support a broad variety of wildlife species.
