Agency Details:
Worcester Common Ground, Inc.
Worcester Common Ground-is a non-profit, member-based organization comprising land trust residents, concerned citizens, housing advocates and community leaders. Our mission is to promote and provide community control of land and permanently affordable ownership housing for low and moderate income residents of Worcester.
Description:
Worcester Common Ground is the community Development Corporation within the Piedmont neighborhoods whose target area encompasses three census tracts at 7314, 7315 and 7316. These tracts encompass the area that extends from May St. on the south to Salisbury St. to the north and is bounded by Main St. and Park Ave. to the east and west. As a practical matter, the organizationÂ's community development efforts have concentrated on the areas within these three census tracts that extends from Pleasant St. south to May St. As an organization, WCG has provided staff support and or participated in a wide range of neighborhood planning initiatives including but not limited to the Piedmont Initiative, the Main Middle Initiative, the Austin St. Task Force as well as the Downtown Neighborhood Partners. In addtion, it has conducted its own internal planning processes that have integrated the output from these initiatives as well as the priorities established by the Planning Office of the City of Worcester. In 1999, the Projects committee of WCG established three Primary Development Areas (PDAÂ's) as the primary though not exclusive focus of its housing development activity. These are the Piedmont Triangle (the area behind the Greater Worcester YMCA) bounded by Main St., Piedmont St., and Chandler St.); the Piedmont flats which extend from the foot of Crown Hill to Park Avenue between Pleasant St. and Chandler St.; and the Bellevue, Bluff and Bancroft St. sections of Census Tract 7314. Within the parameters established by this directive, the staff of WCG proceeded to assemble the resources to implement a comprehensive and targeted neighborhood revitalization strategy. Technical assistance funds were obtained from HUD, an institutional partnership was established with the YMCA of Greater Worcester, and the framework of a collaborative relationship between residents and several City Departments has been created and sustained through the Austin St. Task Force.
