Simul Legimus, Inc Youth Volunteers

Agency Details:

Simul Legimus, Inc

The objective of this service is for volunteers to establish a relationship with an elderly person living in a nursing home or assisted living situation. We recommend weekly meetings between the volunteer and the resident of the facility. Time can be spent visiting with or reading to the person. Simul Legimus will reimburse the volunteer for the cost of reading materials and for the cost of small gifts or flowers for the resident on special occasions if appropriate.

Description:
With the help of my Mom and my lawyer, I set up a nonprofit organization called Simul Legimus, Inc. This means, “together we read” in Latin. I have taken Latin all through high school and I'm currently enrolled in Latin Classes at the College of the Holy Cross. My brothers and I have been reading to nursing home/rest home residents for the last few years. It was in March of 2001 that I incorporated and enlisted the help of volunteers to read/visit with the elderly in nursing homes. The response has been better than expected! We have placed approximately over 80 volunteers in various nursing homes in Worcester County. The objective of my program is for volunteers to establish a relationship with an elder friend in a nursing home or assisted living situation. Weekly visits are recommended. So many of the elderly have visual impairments which make it difficult for them to read on their own. The volunteers read to the elder friend during their visit. Some elder friends like to keep up with the obituary page, the sports page, articles in the Reader’s Digest.
Simul Legimus, Inc. applauds the volunteer for their time and pays for all of the books, magazines and supplies needed to read to the resident. Small holiday gifts/flowers are also encouraged. One volunteer brings his elder friend a requested Dunkin Donuts coffee to every visit. Again, Simul Legimus, Inc. pays for these expenses. I am in the process of grant writing to cover some of these expenses.

History:
I have been volunteering since I was a freshman in High School. Simul Legimus was incorporated in March of 2001. To date, I have placed over 80 volunteers with elder friends in 7 nursing homes/rest homes in Worcester County.
