Why Me & Sherry's House
Why Me & Sherry's House provides year-round love & support for Central New England families with childhood cancer. From visits to the pediatric oncology clinics, to a family Christmas party for 500 Why Me kids, siblings and parents, to our bereavement support groups for parents and siblings, Why Me is there for the families when and where they need it most. Sherry's House provides a child-friendly temporary residence for families while undergoing cancer treatment for their child.
Description:
Treatment can often take years and unfortunately, many children do experience long term health consequences and re-occurrences. Learning disabilities and medical complications affect quality of life and learning. Why Me has a lasting and personal relationship with each child and their family. All funds are raised directly by the Why Me organization and no funding comes from our hospital partners. Patients are referred directly from hospital staff or as a call-in needing help. No further burden of proof is required. All assistance and services are offered free of charge.
History:
Created by Sherry Shepherd, the very first child cancer patient at the then new Pediatric Oncology Unit at UMASS Memorial Medical Center in Worcester to lift the spirits of her fellow child cancer patients. Sherry passed away in 1985 at the age of 13. Since 1985, Why Me has provided direct support to nearly 350 families, helping 290 Children overcome cancer-an unprecedented 84% Childhood Cancer Survivor Rate! 87% of All families served since 1985 remain active with the organization today.
