Old Sturbridge Village
Old Sturbridge Village is an outdoor living history museum. The Village's purpose is to provide modern Americans with a deepened understanding of their own times through a personal encounter with the New England Past.
Description:
Volunteer positions are available throughout the Village. For example, many volunteers work behind-the-scenes by assisting staff with clerical and organizational duties, assembling kits and seed packets for sale, data entry, brochure distribution and photography developing. Other volunteers work directly with the public in roles such as greeting and orienting visitors and school groups to the museum, volunteering in period costume at the Visitor Center, Center Village, Mill area, and demonstrating hand skills. Volunteers also assist in the herb garden, boat dock, children's museum and engaging visitors in hands-on activities.
History:
Founded by the Wells family of Southbridge, Massachusetts, Old Sturbridge Village opened its doors to the public in 1946. The museum's major exhibit area re-creates the daily life of a rural inland community in the 1830s, the Village portrays the family structures, work processes, patterns of taste and the social, economic, legal and religious interactions that made a New England town a complex and changing place. Old Sturbridge Village is the largest institution of its kind in the Northeast, third largest in the country.
