John Andrew Mazie Memorial Foundation

To fulfill the legacy of John Andrew Mazie by recruiting and training adult volunteers to Mentor and act as role models for vulnerable Framingham High School students. To provide young people with the support they need to take control of their lives, set and achieve goals, prepare to apply to college or other post-secondary training, and experience success.

Description:
School counselors recommend the students for the program in their sophomore year. Volunteer Mentors are recruited from the community. Mentors are asked to commit to make a positive impact on a Mentee's life by engaging in face-to-face activities for a minimum of eight hours per month for at least one year. Mentors are encouraged to establish a trusting relationship with their Mentees and to engage in activities and discussions that will improve their Mentee’s self confidence and self esteem. Mentors are supported by a full time Program Director and a part time Liaison Social Worker.

Mentors support their Mentees in establishing and achieving 3 month, 6 month, 12 month and Senior year goals around community service, academics, their career options, personal fitness and family relations. The Foundation presents goal achievement awards, including lap top computers for the 12-month goal and $2000 scholarships upon high school graduation.

Additional information about the Foundation and its Mentoring Program can be found at http://www.mazie.org , by calling 508-358-0765 or by e-mail at maziefdn@comcast.net.

History:
The Foundation and its Mentoring Program was started in 1998. To date, over 200 Framingham High School students have been paired with volunteer Mentors from the community. New students enter the program in October and February at the rate of 30 per year.
