Save a Dog is an all-breed, all-volunteer dog rescue and adoption agency devoted to helping adoptable, friendly, dogs find permanent homes in the New England area. Save A Dog is a 501c3 company approved and listed by the MA Dept. of Agricultural Resources (DAR).

Description:
Our adoption facility is located at 604 Boston Post Road (Rt. 20) in Sudbury, MA. Phone is 978-443-7282. You can meet our dogs by private appointment once we have received your application. We also have hours for showing the adoptable dogs on Sat and Sun from 12-4, but check our Web site, www.saveadog.org as our hours are subject to change. We take in dogs from high-volume shelters and thus save them from being put to sleep. We also take in dogs whose owners no longer want or who have been abandoned. We incorporated as a 501c3 nonprofit in 1999 and we were the first dog rescue group in the Boston Metrowest area to bring in dogs from states that have an over-population problem. We use foster homes so that we can better evaluate the dog's personalities. We temperament test the dogs and we try to make the best match for applicant and dog. We developed a health and temperament protocol and quarantined our dogs long before it was it was state-mandated.

What sets us apart from all the dog rescue groups who have recently sprung up? We do not just rescue puppies, but focus on dogs truly in need. We will not turn down special needs dogs or dogs who are senior in age. If we are going to bring in dogs from out of state, we choose a mix of adult dogs slated for euthanasia as well as adolescent dogs and pups who were abandoned when they outgrew their cuteness. We use a holistic protocol for the medical care and have seen great results with alternative medicine such as acupuncture and homeopathy and a good diet.

We love working with people who want to "save a dog" as opposed to people who just want a cute puppy. We believe in educating our adoption community and will send you home with extensive instructions on how to care for your new dog or pup as well as recommendations for health and training. We have you sign an adoption contract that ensures the dog will never again end up in a shelter. We spay and neuter the adults dogs prior to placement and provide a rebate for puppy spays and neuters.

Our dogs are up to date on vaccinations, but we don't over-vaccinate as we know that this can lead to immune deficiency problems and we will educate you about that. We use holistic care and homeopathy as our primary medical protocol. We use positive reinforcement training for our dogs and we require that you obedience train your dog using positive methods. We work with a select few out-of-state shelters who we trust to give us healthy dogs that are friendly and adoptable. We have a good relationship with these shelters and we help them out with donations for their special needs and hardship cases.

If you would like to meet our rescued dogs, please fill out an application (www.saveadog.org/applytoadopt.asp) or come to visit the dogs. See our Events page for hours. Also, if you fill out an application, you can make a private appointment to see the dogs. Filling out an application is the best way to express your interest as the dogs require our undivided attention during the day, hence we tend to read emails after the dogs go to bed. We do not place dogs on a "first come, first serve" basis but we try to find the right match for each dog. We also have a return policy. Adoption dates are posted on our Web site, www.saveadog.org/events.

History:
Save A Dog was founded in 1999 by husband and wife team, Shirley Moore and David Bernier. To date, Save A Dog has rescued and placed close to 3000 dogs. Save A Dog is listed on Guidestar (look under Wayland or Sudbury) and is recognized by the Mass Department of Agriculture.
