Arthritis Foundation Massachusetts Chapter, Inc.
The mission of the Arthritis Foundation is to improve lives through leadership in the prevention, control and cure of arthritis and related diseases.
History:
In 1948, the American Rheumatism Organization, a professional organization, helped establish the Arthritis and Rheumatism Foundation to serve the interests of arthritis patients. From the start the new foundation had a combined interest in research and direct service to people with arthritis, and strong links to the healthcare community. In 1964, it reorganized and became the Arthritis Foundation.
Today the Arthritis Foundation (AF) has 47 chapters nationwide, and plays a leadership role in the battle against arthritis. The AF's mission is "to improve lives through leadership in the prevention, control, and cure of arthritis and related diseases." It has developed a variety of nationally promulgated courses and workshops for people with arthritis; publishes highly regarded written materials on arthritis for consumers and health professionals; and advocates to government on behalf of Americans with arthritis. The AF is also America's largest private funder of arthritis research, providing a total of $368,000,000 between 1948 and 2004--a disproportionate amount of which has supported Massachusetts-based researchers. In 2002 Worth Magazine named the AF one of America's Top 100 Charities.
The Arthritis Foundation Massachusetts Chapter was among the AF's 11 founding chapters. The Chapter serves people with arthritis statewide from our office in Newton. We receive guidance, direction, and non-financial support from the Foundation's national office in Atlanta, Georgia, and our programming for consumers benefits greatly from both the AF's excellent curricula and materials and our frequent sharing with creative chapters across the country. However, we are financially self-supporting and separately incorporated.
Key achievements of the Massachusetts Chapter include a vibrant program of educational interventions for people with arthritis of all ages; active public outreach through television and newspapers; and generous funding for local and national research.
