The mission of Horizons for Homeless Children is to improve the lives of homeless children and their families. We provide homeless children in Massachusetts with the nurturing, stimulation and opportunities for early education and play that all children need to learn and grow in healthy ways.

Description:
Horizons for Homeless Children installs Playspaces in family shelters, for the children to have safe, fun and unique playrooms to spend time during their stay. Complete with educational toys, games, books, and arts and craft supplies, Playspaces help homeless children have the opportunity to grow and develop in healthy ways and assist them in achieving success in school and beyond. In addition, the program trains and places volunteers in the Playspaces, to play with the children as their parents are involved in other activities.

History:
Founded in 1988, Horizons for Homeless Children (formerly The Horizons Initiative) is Massachusetts's only non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to meeting the needs of homeless children and their families. At The Playspace Programs, we install and equip playspaces in family shelters and we train volunteers to work and play with children. The Playspace Programs have been successfully run in the Greater Boston area since 1990 and we are planning an expansion of the program to other regions of Massachusetts. Presently there are over 800 volunteers who are placed at more than 100 shelter sites throughout the state.
