Agency Details:
The Community Builders/ Plumley Village
The Community Builders is a non-profit organization that assists community based organizations with the development, financing, and management of affordable housing for economically disadvantaged people. The mission of The Community Builders is to build and sustain strong communities where people of all incomes achieve their full potential.
Description:
The Community Builders of Plumley Village offers a wide range of services to the residents of Plumley Village and the surrounding neighborhood. These programs include workforce development, resume writing, budget assistance, agency referrals, GED classes, computer classes, translations, and youth programming. We also partner with other on-site agencies including the Boys and Girls Club, Worcester Youth Guidance, The UMASS-Memorial Health Clinic, WIC, and the Henry Lee Willis Food Pantry.
History:
Founded in 1964, The Community Builders is the largest nonprofit urban housing developer in the country. Expanding from a humble beginning in Boston, The Community Builders has completed more than 17,000 units of affordable and mixed-income housing, and manages more than 6,500 units. When The Community Builders took over the ownership and management of Plumley Village in 1989-1990, it was a very different place than it is now. The broken windows, abandoned cars and grafitti covered walls are now a thing of the past. Maintaining the property and providing a variety of important services to its residents have helped make Plumley Village a stable, secure, desirable neighborhood.
