Volunteer cooks for community of former prisoners

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on December 21, 2008

Every night residents of Dismas House come together to share in an evening meal. Volunteers from the community are huge part of this important piece of the Dismas House program. At our two homes, at Dismas House and Almost Home, volunteers provide this family-building activity. By bringing a meal and sitting down to enjoy it family style with the residents, volunteer cooks help to supply a critical service and create the supportive family atmosphere that is the core of the Dismas philosophy. Our volunteer cooks are students, church groups, families, and individuals who come on a monthly, weekly, or occasional basis. Some prefer to bring meals already prepared, or use our kitchen to prepare meals on site with help from the residents. Many volunteers bring their children, family or friends. Groups of 2-5 can be both the easiest and the most fun. We try to serve meals promptly at 6:00pm Monday-Friday, and cooks should plan for twelve residents plus the number of volunteers. Please contact Dismas House for more specific information, or ideas on how to organize a group at your church or organization.
