Points Of Light Youth Leadership Institute
RSS XML FeedBackground Active Jun 18, 2007 to Aug 18, 2007

The United Way of Central Massachusetts is pleased to offer area high school students the opportunity to participate in the Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute free of charge to any resident of Worcester County. The Institute will be held August 6-17, 2007 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday’s from 9AM-2PM.

The mission of the Youth Leadership Institute is to “provide youth with the encouragement, peer networks and leadership skills necessary for them to make meaningful contributions to their communities and begin a life-long journey of leadership and service.” The Institute is composed of three main elements: the curriculum, the community service project, and the graduation ceremony. The curriculum is divided into 16 interactive components that include topics such as teamwork, leadership, community service, creativity, goal setting, decision-making, and reflection. The program culminates with a youth-designed service project for the community of Worcester. Last summer our students were very successful in completing their project at Friendly House, mentoring young children involved in the summer program. Finally, the Institute closes with a graduation ceremony, which is an opportunity for the students to celebrate all that they have accomplished and at the same time receive recognition from the community of Worcester for their dedication, commitment, and achievement.

If you or any high school student you know would be interested in participating in the Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute please contact Kristine Sullivan or Kerri Sandberg at the United Way today. Applications are currently being accepted and the class will fill quickly. For more information call 508-757-5631, x. 203 or email at ksullivan@unitedwaycm.org.
