Mt. Zion AME Church mission and vision is to proclaim the “Message of Hope” through the teachings of Jesus Christ with excellence in the care of social and spiritual needs of unbelievers and believers including Church School, Missions, Inspirational Worship Services, Youth Ministries, Discipleship Training and Membership opportunities. Our objective is to offer this “Message of Hope” with Care, Courtesy, Consideration, Compassion and a Christlike attitude.
Description:
Mt. Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church is to minister to the spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, an environmental needs of all people by spreading Christ’s liberating gospel through word and deed. At every level of the Connection and in every local church, the African Methodist Episcopal Church shall engage in the carrying out the spirit of the original Free African Society, out of which the AME Church evolved: that is to seek out and save the lost; and serve the needed through a continuing program of 1. Preaching the gospel 2. Feeding the hungry 3. Clothing the naked 4. Housing the homeless 5. Cheering the fallen 6. Providing jobs for the jobless 7. Administering to the needs of those in prisons, hospitals, nursing homes, asylums and mental institutions, senior citizens homes; carrying for the sick, the shut-in, the mentally and socially disturbed, and 8. encouraging thrift and economic development.
History:
On May 24, 2003, the pastor Rev. Dr. Joan L. Wharton and the members of Mt. Zion AME Church of Glen Arm, Maryland in Baltimore County celebrated 150 years of ministry and service to the State of Maryland. This church has dedicated 155 years of service to Kingdom-building. It has worked tirelessly and unashamedly for the city, state and surrounding communities. Mt. Zion has labored and sacrificed a lot to see that a generation of people in the Long Green/Glen Arm community would come to know life at its best. Mt. Zion have sent young children to school and college. We have fed the hungry, clothe the cloth less, and found shelter for the homeless. Mt. Zion has given finances to those in need on a consistent basis. This church is a role model for the entire city and state. Mr. Freedman, the first slave to be free in Baltimore County is buried in our graveyard.
