South Baltimore Learning Center
The mission of the South Baltimore Learning Center (SBLC) is to improve the self-sufficiency of educationally disadvantaged adults. SBLC is a community based nonprofit organization providing functional literacy and life skills training, in addition to career preparation services to residents in the Baltimore area.
Description:
The South Baltimore Learning Center was started in 1988 as the literacy project for the Coalition of Peninsula Organizations (COPO). In 1990, it became a neighborhood based initiative providing tutoring to adults in the community and has since grown to serve hundreds of adults each year offering a variety of services. SBLC’s vision is to: increase the pool of literate and skilled workers in the City of Baltimore; increase the number of adults with a high school diploma; and help break the cycle of poverty by breaking the cycle of low educational attainment in generations of families.
