Organization Details:
Young Audiences Of Maryland
Young Audiences of Maryland’s mission is to inspire, broaden horizons, foster creativity, provide opportunities to reflect and communicate through the arts, promote positive development, build skills and knowledge, reinforce classroom learning, and promote understanding. We achieve this by providing live performances, hands-on workshops, and in-depth arts experiences of the highest artistic level to the youth in Maryland schools and communities. Young Audiences develops its artists so they have the ability to fulfill the objectives outlined above and Young Audiences staff, board, and artists strive to make these programs accessible to all communities and schools.
Description:
Young Audiences of Maryland has provided artistically excellent age-appropriate and accessible arts experiences to Maryland schools and communities for over 56 years. Our services include the following: Assembly Programs which introduces students to specific artistic disciplines and a variety of cultures through live performances. The Workshops reinforce the content of the assembly program while giving students the opportunity to work closely with a professional artist(s). They are an economical way to provide hands-on, introductory learning in an art form. An Artist in Residence Program is a series of workshops during which teaching artists, with the ongoing support and participation of classroom teachers or afterschool staff, actively engage students in creative experiences. These programs are skills-based and integrate into the curriculum. Individually Designed Arts Packages are tailored arts experiences to meet a specific school or community need. Coordinating three days of family activities for Artscape is an example of this service. Professional Development Programs provides training to help teachers integrate arts into the classroom. These programs can be used to increase teachers’ comfort level in teaching both in and through the arts and provide the basis for improving student achievement in the arts and academic subjects. Family and Community Programs help schools increase family involvement by using fun, engaging arts activities as the draw. These programs can also be perfect for weekend festivals, library programs and community events.
History:
Beginning in 1950 as the "Young Musicians' Series," Young Audiences evolved out of the concern of arts patron, Nina Wood Collier, that young people were completing school and spending their lives without ever having heard a live performance by a professional musician. This series was the beginning of Young Audiences of Maryland and paved the way for many other Young Audiences chapters and the formation of a national organization in 1952. Today, Young Audiences has grown to 32 chapters in 24 states and Young Audiences of Maryland is now one of the most utilized arts and arts education resources in the state.
