Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge
Our mission is to administer a national network of lands and waters for the conservation, management and where appropriate, restoration of the fish, wildlife, and plant resources and their habitats within the United States for the benefit of present and future generations of Americans.
Description:
Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge comprises 30,700 acres of wetlands, prairie openings and oak savanna and is home to an astounding array of native animals. Bald eagles, sandhill cranes, hawks, ducks and geese all might be seen. The refuge provides a variety of opportunities for experiencing nature including: hiking and cross country ski trails, a wildlife drive, fishing and hunting (state regulations apply).
History:
The refuge was established in 1965 to help protect and restore the historic St. Francis River Valley. Today the refuge encompasses 30,700 acres of land. This gently rolling topography lies within a transition zone of two major ecosystems - deciduous forest and tallgrass prairie.
