District 742 Community Education Adults with Disabilities Program

The St. Cloud Area School District 742 Community Education Adults with Disabilities Program enhances the lives of persons with disabilities by providing a variety of educational and recreational opportunities. As a result, participants will be more informed, healthier, more social and more involved in their community.

Description:
The Adults with Disabilities project supports people with developmental disabilities and encourages participation in their community. The program provides 150+ educational and recreational classes/activities each year for adults sixteen and up.(ex. cooking and craft classes, dances, bowling, sporting events etc.) Volunteers are needed to provide assistance and add another pair of hands in these classes/activities along with an extra measure of personal warmth and caring. While volunteering with our program, you will enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities.

History:
During the 1960's and 1970's, people advocated for changing laws to provide people with disabilities the opportunity to participate in educational and recreational activities of their choice. Civil rights legislation and the Rehabilitation Act mandated quality participation for all. In 1980 Community
Education responded to social changes and new laws affecting Minnesotans. In 1985-86, $250,000 in state funds were appropriated by the Mn State Legislature to develop Community Education programing for adults with disabilities. An application process required a 50 percent match with local funds. As a result, 19 projects were funded across the state, St. Cloud being one of them.
