Friendly Visitor/Telephone Companion

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Description: Friendly visitors visit with and provide companionship to older adults in their own homes. Activities may include playing cards, looking at photo albums or going on outings to restaurants, stores, movies or other places of interest. Telephone companions make regular (daily or weekly) phone calls to older adults.

Purpose: To provide companionship and socialization thereby reducing isolation and loneliness.

Responsibilities:
Attend initial volunteer orientation and occasional training sessions
Accompany staff member to meet the care receiver you are matched with on first visit.
Participate in a variety of activities in addition to visiting as appropriate.
Maintain and report volunteer hours to Faith in Action on a regular basis.
Maintain client confidentiality.

Time Commitment: Initial commitment of one year, approximately 1 to 2 hours per week.

Qualifications:
Enjoy working with people. Desire to establish a relationship with an older adult or physically challenged person.
Comfortable with physical disabilities.
Possess excellent communications skills especially active listening.
Willingness to give 1-2 hours per week.
Be at least 18 years of age.

Impact: One to one companionship and interaction between a volunteer and a care receiver reduces isolation and loneliness. A friendship is developed which can lead to improvement of the quality of life for an older person and make connections with other community resources, thus enabling the care receiver to live in his/her home longer.
