The Dane County Youth Board is the all-youth subcommittee of the Dane County Youth Commission. We comprise and represent diverse youth from high-schools around Dane County through our mission of increasing youth leadership, volunteerism and civic engagement.

Description:
Our High School group meets Thursday nights at the Neighborhood House from 6:30-8:30pm to discuss issues and plan events that further our mission. We've hosted an Open House to bring awareness of the school system budget cuts, which will negatively affect the music, arts, student services and more avenues that students need to thrive in school. In October of 2007 we attended a conference on youth and adult partnerships in civic activity and we hope to use what we learned in all of our events in the coming years. We do several service projects throughout the year, including helping out with the Martin Luther King Youth Service Day in January, where we lead workshops. In the past we held a Teen-Summit that has focused on violence in schools, youth and adults from all over the county were welcome and we enjoyed the event and plan to host more summits to call people to action! 2009, is the year and period where we are restructuring the foundation of the Youth Board, and focusing on a really big and timely issue. The Minority Achievement Gap, is been protruding and infecting the lives of so many young people, that change must come now. As the Dane County Youth Board - the voice of Dane County, we are campaigning to bring change from our neighborhoods to our schools, from our families to our communities, from our teachers to our parents, from our cities to the county. We must all take responsibility for the mess we have made and roll our sleeves up and get dirty to clean up our county. We have come to bring change, and change must take place, NOW!

History:
The Youth Board was created in 1984 as a subcommittee of the Youth Commission. The intention was to create a body of youth to represent Dane County, who could advise the youth commission on issues that affect youth in our communities. This goal is still a reality, with Youth Board members attending monthly Youth Commission meetings as active members.
