Sherman Avenue United Methodist Church

Sherman Avenue United Methodist Church (SAUMC) is located on the north side of Madison, close to Warner Park. SAUMC offers a free weekly English as a Second Language course to any interested adult or high school student. Currently, in its second year, SAUMC's ESL program is serving 12 Hmong women, 11 of whom are mothers.

Description:
SAUMC's ESL program is teaching 12 Hmong women written and spoken English and offers free children's activities, clothing give-aways, hot meals and snacks during ESL. Volunteers are needed to lead or assist in a wide range of children's activities such as, arts & crafts, kicking a soccer ball or tutoring school-aged math. Volunteers are invited to join us for dinner and, if interested, sit-in on an informal session to learn about Hmong languages and cultures.

History:
Sherman Avenue United Methodist Church was established in 1953 to serve the spiritual and community needs of the people of Madison's north side. The congregation is not large but very active. We are a group of dedicated Christians who are helping their community by working together. Our congregation is very diverse. In 2005, SAUMC recognized a need for an additional free English as a Second Language course on Madison's north side and organized to fulfill this need.
