Fitchburg Fields is working alongside many other groups in Dane County to create a local food system that will improve our health and our environment. Our main emphasis is on training future farmers and gardeners. Our long-term goal is to create a model program of environmental sustainability.

Description:
We are launching our first garden in the spring of 2009, and we need experienced and new gardeners, technically-savvy folks, teachers, and fund raisers to help us! Our first garden site will supply the Allied Drive Food Pantry with fresh vegetables, provide our cooking and food preservation classes with the raw materials for delicious meals, and teach our incubator gardeners all aspects of creating a community garden project. Our gardener graduates will create new gardens next year, thus increasing local food production and community cohesion.

Our ultimate goal is to create a 250-acre center for organic agriculture and sustainable living in Northeast Fitchburg. Fitchburg Fields will be an inspiring example for people who want to learn how to live sustainably in a changing world. This timely project will become an educational example of what every large community in the country will need as we respond to global climate change by reducing our carbon footprint for housing, transportation and food.

Fitchburg Fields will be one of the first centers to integrate: a working farm for teaching and practicing small-scale, organic agriculture; an eco-village for sharing sustainable living and cutting edge solutions for energy, water and land use in a living classroom; a year-round Farmers' Market; and other related amenities.

By bringing together a broad coalition of groups that share our goals and by inviting other communities to learn from our experience, we can bring about a transition to a sustainable society.

History:
Fitchburg Fields is a non-profit organization incorporated in February 2008 and governed by a Board of Directors and assisted by an Advisory Board. It has a half time staff person and several work committees. We are in the beginning stages of project development and fund raising. This project will be realized in stages as gardener and farmer training programs are developed and land is converted from current use to an organic oasis of opportunity!
