Oregon Public Library
The Oregon Public Library fosters lifelong learning by providing free and equal access to timely information and technology with links to schools and other community resources. The Oregon Public Library is a space for all ages to meet and exchange ideas. Our mission supports the educational civic, and cultural activities of the community and responds to changing community needs by providing efficient services and resources in a non-judgmental, friendly environment.
Description:
Located in the downtown area of the Village of Oregon, the Oregon Public Library provides library service to the residents of the Village and surrounding communities. Our service population exceeds 15,000. We provide a variety of programs for the community including story times for infants to preschoolers; after-school craft days; a summer reading program for children, teens, and adults; adult book group; adult programs about topics of general interest, and Internet service. While we are small (10,500 square feet), we strive for quality customer service to our patrons. In 2007, we checked-out 271,934 items, answered 7,157 reference questions, and had 56,790 uses of our public PCs. We have used volunteers for a number of years. However, we formalized the process in 2007 with a volunteer policy, a volunteer application, volunteer job descriptions, and a screening process. We have a volunteer co-ordinator who works with the library managers to secure needed volunteers. As of August 31, our volunteers have logged 660 hours.
History:
In 1908 a group of interested citizens held fund raisers to pay the rent for a room that housed books from the Traveling State Library. The Village of Oregon Board of Trustees voted in 1910 to tax the citizens of Oregon for the purpose of establishing and operating a public library. The library has moved seven times during its history. In 1994 the Village Board agreed to build a library. The Oregon Public Library opened its doors at the new location on December 27, 1995. The population was 4,800. Today it is 8,500. The library has not expanded since 1995, but it has reorganized and changed in the intervening years to accommodate a growing community.
