The Exchange Center For The Prevention Of Child Abuse
The mission of The Exchange Center is to prevent physical child abuse and neglect by identifying high-risk families in Dane County and teaching them positive parenting skills through in-home visiting programs.
Description:
Using a blend of staff and volunteers, The Exchange Center helps parents be positive role models for their children, providing a healthy, nurturing environment in which the child can develop and be ready for school and life. Our services are provided with sensitivity to the unique needs of families and individuals and with recognition for the cultural context in which participants are parenting. The Exchange Center’s programs are open to all, regardless of race, religion, culture, disability, or sexual orientation.
Our programs use a home visitation model based on the nationally recognized "Parents as Teachers" curriculum. Our home visitation model is promoted by the National Exchange Club Foundation, which adopted child abuse prevention as a national priority in 1979.
History:
On August 6, 1984, the Exchange Center opened its doors with a ribbon cutting ceremony at its first offices at 302 E. Washington Avenue in Madison. In January 1985, The Exchange Center placed its first volunteer with a family. Professional staff and program growth have evolved over the years. Funding remains an on-going challenge for the members of the Board of Directors and the Executive staff. At the present time, funding comes from a variety of public and private sources including Dane County, state, and federal grants, the United Way of Dane County, various fund raising efforts conducted by members of the Board of Directors, the Exchange Clubs located in Dane County, and other community organizations and individuals.
The Exchange Center’s philosophy is a product of the aforementioned mission. In striving for excellence in accomplishing our mission, it is important for staff to be team members who are supportive of one another, of the families in our programs, and all other members of the community in which we work and with whom we come into contact. A few of these expectations include but are not limited to: being helpful to others, volunteering to help acquire funding for The Exchange Center when time permits, and maintaining a cheerful and courteous demeanor at work while promoting a professional attitude of respect to all you meet and with whom you work each day. Our final objective is to maintain an environment where all employees can enjoy their work.
