Child Development, Inc. - WI - Madison/Dane County
The mission of Child Development, Inc. (CDI) is to provide children of working parents outstanding, nurturing, school preparatory early childhood education that readies children for success in the Madison Public Schools and their lives.
Description:
CDI provides quality care and education for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years old. CDI has two preschools: our flagship campus on the South side and another facility on Madison's East side. We also provide drop in care at the Dane County Job Center. The low-income and minority populations CDI serves are are lagging far behind in math and science readiness when they enter grade school. This readiness gap seriously impacts these students’ ability to succeed not just academically but also in the workplace. In response, CDI recently launched its Math and Science Preschools. We are building on our strong existing curriculum to create and deliver a comprehensive focus on math and science.
History:
In 1965, Juvenile Court Judge Bruner and a group of Madison community members joined together to address a need for early childhood education for all children. The mission of this group was to provide affordable, high quality early childhood education and services to families with preschool children in the Madison area.
Moved by the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968, a group of Madison citizens began to look for a project to show their concern for low-income families in Madison. Soon, the “Foundation for Friendship” was formed. Efforts were concentrated on creating a new early childhood education center on Madison’s South side, Child Development, Inc. (CDI)
Through the years, CDI has operated five early childhood education centers in Madison and surrounding communities. Today CDI has three centers, the South Madison center, which is the first CDI building, Nature of Kids, and the Drop-In Center at the Dane County Job Site/Wisconsin Shares office. Each center serves primarily low-income families; approximately ninety percent of all families receive W-2 childcare assistance funding from Dane County. All three centers serve diverse families in term of race, religion and backgrounds.
