Wisconsin Veterans Museum Research Center

As a part of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs, the Wisconsin Veterans Museum Research Center offers a unique service to Wisconsin-connected veterans. This service is to preserve their letters, photos, scrapbooks, diaries and journals, reminiscences (both written and in oral histories), military papers, veteran materials, newsletters and periodicals, books and other materials for the veteran and for the veteran's family and descendants. These materials are also used by researchers, which include teachers and students at all levels.

History:
The Wisconsin Veterans Museum was established in 1901 in the State Capitol and known as the G.A.R. Memorial Hall. Originally established to commemorate the military service of Civil War veterans, its purpose has expanded to encompass subsequent wars. The Wisconsin Veterans Museum has a national reputation as it spans wars from the Civil War to current, and encompasses all branches of military service. The focus is on the individual stories and experiences of Wisconsin-connected people who served. Our knowledge of war must not exclude the individual as this expands our understanding and empathy.
