The purpose of MARC is to enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

MARC offers day services and supported employment opportunities to adults with developmental disabilities throughout the Dane County area.

Description:
MARC achieves its Purpose and defines its Mission by:

Advocating for the full inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the life of the community;

Fostering opportunities for individuals with disabilities to develop a sense of self-worth and dignity, acquire new skills, attitudes and experiences, and make choices among options for employment, recreation and social interaction;

Providing an array of support services, tailored to individual strengths, preferences and needs, including employment, adult education, training, personal care and case management;and

Promoting communication, cooperation and collaboration among individuals with disabilities, their families and friends, and community agencies.

History:
MARC services began in 1952 when several mothers started a nursery school for their children with developmental disabilities instead of following medical advice to institutionalize their children.

Only high functioning children with developmental disabilities were permitted in public schools so MARC developed programs for children with multiple disabilities.

Federal Law 94-142 followed in 1975 which required public education for all children with disabilities,thus relieving MARC's responsibility for the school age group.

As a result of the new law, MARC programs then provided vital day services and employment for adults with developmental disabilities. MARC pioneered various work activities and community supported employment opportunities in the late 1960's and early 1970's.

MARC receives Dane County, Wisconsin and Federal funding to provide employment and day services to over 300 adults with developmental disabilities. MARC has 6 centers located throughout Dane County area.
