Friends of Dane County Farmers' Market
Mission: Connect the consumers and producers of our locally and sustainably produced food.
Description:
Volunteers play a major role in every activity and program planned by the Friends of Dane County Farmers' Market. They assist with School on the Square activities for children and adults during the summer and Monona Terrace markets. Volunteers work with REAP to distribute the Farm Fresh Atlas each spring. Volunteers work at fund raising events during the winter markets at the Madison Senior Center for the annual Used Cookbook Sale and Market Breakfast with L'Etoille Restaurant. And volunteers work all year round running the FoodShare program for the market.
History:
The parent orgaization--Dane County Farmers' Market--was 35 years old when Friends of Dane County Farmers' Market was founded in 2002. Friends projects began in the summer of 2003 with food tastings and children's food related activities on the Capitol Square. School on the Square began in 2004 and expanded the activities to include more adult programs and Meet the Farmer sessions with market vendor participation at the Schools. That same year Friends began a partnership with the University of Wisconsin Dietetics and Nutrition Club that included summer School and winter market breakfast activities. During the winter indoor markets Friends also offered organization and membership information, held fund raising activities and, since 2007, has collaborated with the Community Action Coalition to run a food drive between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
In April, 2008, Friends obtained a USDA license to operate the FoodShare program for the Dane County Farmers' Market on a year round basis.
