MUM has the following guiding values:
Helping frame issues with compassion, mercy and justice
Promoting interfaith cooperation and collaboration
Asking the question: "Are all people's voices being heard?"
Engaging youth on issues of concern
Promoting respectful and thoughtful dialogue
Advocating with low-income people
Emphasizing change in systems
Description: Madison-area Urban Ministry is a non-profit, interfaith social justice advocacy and direct service agency. Our advocacy efforts are generally focused in the areas of homelessness, poverty, racism and criminal justice reform.
We provide direct services to children of incarcerated parents through our Mentoring Connections program which matches a child of an incarcerated parent with a trained adult mentor.
Our Journey Home Program (a United Way Initiative) and our Circles of Support programs help individuals who are returning from prison rebuild their lives and reduce recidivism rates. The programs work with landlords, employers, and utilize community volunteers to help support formerly incarcerated individuals as the strive to reintegrate into our community.
History: Founded in 1973, MUM is an interfaith urban ministry organization which acts as a catalyst to help individuals, faith groups, and community groups to "stand with the poor and hurting" and "plant seeds of social change." MUM links over 100 faith communities and over three thousand individual supporters and volunteers through our ministry of word and action.
MUM is often the major voice for those living in poverty, the disenfranchised, and the marginalized. During its history, fourteen of the most innovative and community-building nonprofits in the area were conceived and hatched by MUM. These include Project Home, the North East Side Senior Coalition, Family Connections, Family Enhancement, Transitional Housing Inc., Madison Community Health Center, and others. Currently MUM serves as the incubator for the Allied Wellness Center, Voices Beyond Bars, the School Supplies for Kids and Allied Drive Neighborhood Association.
MUM has been a leading advocate in the areas of housing, homelessness and poverty prevention, healthcare for all, ending racial disparities in incarceration and the implementation of Restorative Justice practices throughout our state. MUM also offers Mentoring Connections, a program that matches adult mentors with children of incarcerated parents. Our Journey Home and Circles of Support Programs offer assistance to individuals newly released from prison. In addition, for over ten years we have been conducting Returning Prisoner Simulations in the community to help increase awareness and understanding of the challenges faced by newly released prisoners.
