Logo

Our mission is to protect and interpret natural resources, educate the public, provide recreational opportunities and provide volunteer opportunities that give the community a sense of ownership of the parks.

Description:
The Adult Conservation Team is the exciting volunteer program of Dane County Parks. Our volunteers include youth and youth groups, community groups, individuals and families. Adult Conservation Team volunteers get involved to make a difference.

The Adult Conservation Team provides a partnership that benefits Dane County Parks and that ensures satisfaction for the volunteers. Check out the Adult Conservation Team; there's something for just about everyone!

Every year thousands of Adult Conservation Team volunteers restore native habitat, conduct research, help in parks and campgrounds and participate in special events like National Trails Day. They provide campground host services, maintain bluebird trails, build trails, help in our office and more. We also work with Eagle Scout candidates.

In addition to scheduled workdays like seed collecting or field work, individually arranged projects are always possible at Dane County Parks. If you or your group would like to do a community service project, we will arrange a project for you that suits your schedule, your group's age, and our needs. And if you are just one person with an idea, give us a call and we'll see how we can work together.

History:
Dane County Parks began in 1935 with Stewart Park in Mt. Horeb. Today we have 33 parks and nine resource protection areas. We provide boat launches, trails (equestrian, mountain bike, cross country skiing), off-leash dog exercise areas, hiking trails, prairies, wetlands, woods, a championship disc golfcourse and much more.

We also provide five campgrounds, in Mendota, Babcock, Brigham, Token Creek and Lake Farm Parks, and group campgrounds at Lake Farm, Token Creek, Brigham and Indian Lake. Another group campground is being developed at McCarthy Youth & Conservation Park.

The Adult Conservation Team began in 1992 in order to create partnerships between the Parks Department and the community. Since then it has grown to include thousands of volunteers, including many community-based groups which are our partners in the development of parks and open spaces.

We have several Friends of the Parks groups, at Schumacher Farm, Donald Park, Old Halfway Prairie School, Goose Lake,Lake View Woods, McCarthy Park, Cam-Rock Park, Stewart Park and Pheasant Branch Conservancy. The Friends at Schumacher, Lake View Woods and Donald have a signed agreement with the Parks Department to develop and manage those parks and provide public programs.

The Adult Conservation Team received the National Association of Counties "Acts of Caring" award in 2001. One of our volunteer groups, the Friends of Donald Park, won the United Way Volunteer Center Community Award in the group category in 2002.

The Adult Conservation Team is based at the Lussier Family Heritage Center in Lake Farm Park. This facility opened in September, 2001 and serves as the home base of the volunteer program.
