The YWCA of Madison is committed to self-determined social change for women of all racial, ethnic and economic groups. We provide safe, affordable housing for low-income women, emergency shelter for homeless women and families, and education and training to ensure economic security for women.

OUR ONE IMPERATIVE:

The YWCA locally and nationally has adopted the one imperative of eliminating racism wherever it exists.

Description:
The second floor of our building serves as an emergency shelter for homeless families. On the third and fourth floors, the Third Street program provides innovative and effective programming designed for single mothers with a child four years old or younger.

In addition to shelter the YWCA offers a variety of programs and services available to both YWCA residents and the broader community. These are conducted by staff and through partnerships with Madison Area Technical College, social service agencies and other non-profits.

These programs include:
The TrANS Program. In cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the YWCA is Dane County's provider for the TrANS program which provides low-income women and minority men job training and pre-apprenticeship work in road construction.
Employment and GED classes. In partnership with Madison Area Technical College, the YWCA provides residents with classes in resume writing, computer skills, English as a second language and GED preparation.
The YWCA is positioned to continue our commitment to providing affordable housing; strengthen our training and education programs; and respond to the realities created by changes to the welfare system.

History:
Chartered in 1909, the YWCA of Madison operates its programs from a 12-story building at the corner of East Mifflin Street on the Capitol Square. The largest provider of affordable housing to women in Dane County, the YWCA is home to more that 650 women, children and families each year.
