The vision of the Financial Education Center is to increase the financial literacy skills of residents to empower them to achieve financial security. The mission is to be community resource offering integrated financial education classes, individual coaching and various programs and services in a central and familiar location.

Description:
The Financial Education Center assists in connecting participants to community resources, helps them identify ways to maximize their resources and to begin developing assets. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Partnership Project, which is a program of the Center, provides free income tax preparation for low-wage workers, seniors and those with disabilities. Those who are eligible for state and federal Earned Income Tax Credit and other tax credits are able to file for those tax credits with the assistance of trained volunteers tax preparers.

The variety of classes offered at the Center assist participants in reaching their financial goals. Bankruptcy education and the “Get Checking” Program are also offered at the Center for those who need those services. The staff at the Center work with many community partners to offer classes and services to enhance their programs. The Financial Educator Network is also supported by the Financial Education Center.

History:
The Financial Education Center opened in October of 2005; however, the VITA Partnership Project is starting the sixth year of offering free tax preparation at the Villager Mall. The Center has financial support from a major sponsor, CBM Credit Education Foundation as well as CUNA Mutual Foundation, Great Wisconsin Credit Union, UW Credit Union, Chase Bank, Guaranty Bank, and Madison Gas & Electric.
