Sarvodaya USA
Sarvodaya USA seeks a world of inclusive, healthy and sustainable communities where individuals and organizations consciously act together to overcome political, cultural, geographical, socioeconomic and religious divisions to support quality of life for all.
Description:
Vision:
The vision of Sarvodaya USA is a world of communities based on non-violence, service and cooperation.
Mission:
The mission of Sarvodaya USA is to facilitate individual and community development to meet basic
human needs, reduce material, social and spiritual poverty, and enhance the quality of life for all.
Values:
• All human beings must have access to resources to meet their basic needs.
• All human beings have the capacity to give and receive, and in the process, to transform themselves,
the environment, and their society.
• Recognition of all people’s common interests and strengths can transcend differences based
on ethnicity, gender, physical or mental ability, nationality, social class, age and other attributes.
• The solutions to challenges such as poverty, conflict, and ecological imbalance require a holistic
approach that involves building sustainable economies, providing social support, and integrating
the insights of spirituality. These challenges can best be overcome in communities in
which the power to make decisions is shared among many people at all levels of society.
History:
Sarvodaya USA was established in 1988. Until early 2005, Sarvodaya USA was a small network of volunteers that supported the Sarvodaya Shramadana movement in Sri Lanka. Since the tsunami in 2004, a major part of our focus both in the US and Sri Lanka has been on rebuilding the communities affected by the disaster. However, as many of the tsunami related rebuilding is coming to an end and the escalation of violence in Sri Lanka has become a major challenge, we are currently refocusing our energies in the peace-related work through our National Awakening program. Besides working in Sri Lanka, Sarvodaya USA supports some Sarvodaya inspired local initiatives both in the US and other countries, especially in Nepal.
While Sarvodaya USA is a small organization, the Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement in Sri Lanka is the largest grassroots development organization in the country, working in 15,000 villages. Sarvodaya works with the local communities to facilitate holistic development and its ideologies are taken from Gandhian and Buddhist philosophies. Sarvodaya believes in non-violent and peaceful transformation of societies.
